Without a Mason-Dixon Line, it will be chaos. At least during the Civil War, everyone knew who was in the Confederacy. My state, Wisconsin, has very red areas and very blue areas. We're not purple at all. Checkpoints already exist for things like drunk driving checks and checks for illegal fireworks (and probably for marijuana too). We're not far from this already.
