When I get asked that, I tell people the truth. I teach high school in a high-poverty, crime-ridden area. They look at me like I am a saint or something and say "it takes a special kind of person to do that." It doesn't take a saint. It takes someone who is willing to put up with a lot of sh**. It's a lot of hard work with little gratitude and low pay.
