What You Need to Know About the Minnesota Assassinations
Another “lone assassin” at work?
Saturday morning, I was mindlessly scrolling down my Facebook feed looking for who-know-what, when I came across a post a friend of mine made. It was a warning that an armed gunman was on the loose and that there was a shelter-in-place order in parts of Brooklyn Park, a few miles northwest of where I was. That’s the kind of news that gets my attention, Facebook notwithstanding.
When I turned on the news to see what the commotion was about, I was horrified. Someone had dressed up like a police officer and had a car that looked like a police SUV, and had murdered a well-known Democratic member of the Minnesota House and her husband, and wounded another and their spouse.
This kind of violence doesn’t happen in Minnesota, unless you count George Floyd and Philando Castile. But these legislators weren’t even Black.
The early hours of the investigation
The local news reported that the police had arrived at the home of Melissa Hortman just in time to see a SUV that resembled a police vehicle parked in the driveway and a man in body armor exiting the house. The police exchanged gunfire with the fleeing intruder, but he got away.
