Unity would be a new thing in this country since it never has been unified at all, ever, in its history. The "United States" is at best a misnomer, if not an outright cruelty. The northern states had to compromise deeply to get the south to sign on to the Constitution. They had to pacify the southern states with the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Missouri Compromise to avoid the Civil War, which erupted anyway. Seriously, Lincoln should have let the southern states secede. If he had, we would be better off today. Let the red states go build their conservative dystopia.
