To me, what Trumpism uncovered were the feelings and beliefs people hold but never mention. I realized that a number of "friends" and familly members were people I didn't know very well. I never knew how racist they really were, or how ignorant. Those things just never came up. The question that has to be asked is this: if you knew these things about them before, would you have ever been friends?
