There’s Lies, Damn Lies and Data Science

How the holy grail of data science downgrades our quality of life

I personally cannot think of a topic that is drier and more boring than data science. Just to be clear what I am talking about, let’s take a quick look at the very definition. Here is what Google had to say about it:

“Data science is an academic field that uses scientific methods, statistics, and computing to extract insights from data.”

Is that a yawner or what? Seriously, other than watching re-runs of the Lawrence Welk Show, I don’t know what would put the average person to sleep more quickly, and yet it is all the rage and has been for quite some time. Some people get all giggly and wiggly just thinking about it.

I’m not one of them.

As a matter of fact, the more I think about data science, the more pissed off I become. At face value, there is nothing inherently good or bad about data science, but like most things, it can be used for good or evil, and it can be manipulated to serve the interests of the person doing the analysis of the data.
