The United States: The Great Unraveling
As they say, the only constant is change
Comedian George Carlin once quipped that he is an “entropy fan” in one of his routines, meaning that he enjoys watching the system come apart. Entropy is the 2nd law of thermodynamics and states that, in nature, there is a tendency for any system to degenerate into a more disordered state.
In other words, things break down. That warm room you have in the winter suddenly cools down precipitously when you open a window. You can crank the furnace in an attempt to keep the room warm, but in the end, you will either run out of fuel or the furnace will break down. Before long, that room will be the same temperature as it is outside. The fizzy beverage you left sitting on the table and forgot about? It becomes flat if left too long, and there is no bringing it back. Those fresh vegetables you left in your refrigerator? They become a science experiment.
What happens then, to wealth and power, when it is highly concentrated? I think you know the answer to that question. What we are witnessing in the United States is not aberrant. It is not catastrophic. It is simply natural. The Second Law of Thermodynamics, entropy, is unfolding in the United States as it has since the United States was founded.
