So Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt yesterday. Who would have guessed? When I first heard the news, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I still don’t. What little news has been given is that Trump was shot in the ear by a 20-year-old white male registered Republican who used an AR-15-style rifle from the top of a nearby building.

In looking over the various news reports and the posts made on social media, I realized that the responses were sadly predictable, depending on who was making the response.

Trump no doubt will use this event as still another campaign tactic. Almost immediately after the shooting, he raised his fist in the air to show, well, I don’t know what exactly. Maybe he was simply showing he survived, the way a water skier will hold up their arm to show they are okay after a tumble. Maybe he was holding it up as a way to show everyone how tough he is. Maybe he just didn’t know what else to do. It doesn’t matter.

Trump has already stated that it was God who spared him, in an obvious appeal to the Christian nationalists. After all, if God spared him, isn’t that God’s way of saying Trump should be president? In their world and to their way of thinking (?), the answer would be “yes.”
