The Democrats are first and foremost afraid. They are afraid to make bold proposals. They are afraid of offending anyone. Their slow drift to the right has come as a result of trying to capture the political center. As the GOP moves boldly and unapologetically to the right, the center moves to the right, and with it, the Dems. We are becoming a nation of 2 parties - the GOP and GOP Lite.
