The Bitter Pill the Democrats Must Swallow

Time is running out and a decision has to be made

Midsummer is decision time in our garden. Those seeds and seedlings that were planted back in early May are now either poised to produce, or they are struggling and showing little promise of becoming anything other than next year’s compost. Rarely does a lackluster plant recover and go on to give us table-worthy produce.

The question for us to decide is whether or not enough time remains in the growing season to start over with new seeds and plants. It is always a risk. Replanting is no guarantee either. The new plants might meet the same fate as the old regardless of what effort we expend.

The Democrats are facing the same kind of decision we are.

The fork in the road

The king of malaprops Yogi Berra once said “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” At the present moment, this is where the Democrats are. In front of them is a divergence and they have a decision to make, namely whether or not they are going to continue to support Biden and his quest for a second term. The hand-wringing has already begun, and we can only imagine what is being said in private phone conversations and closed-door meetings with their mega-donors.
