Sometimes I wonder if it is denial, or smoke and mirrors. It can only be denial if the people are actually informed about an issue but don't want to acknowledge it or act on it. The ruling class, who controls the flow if information, can easily hide what is really happening through the media they own. The denial could really be just a state of being oblivious to things.
