Self-Deception Has Become My Hobby
Is it becoming a national pastime?
I am not and have never been a fan of Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and attorney for Donald Trump. Mostly I just find him disgusting in both his personal and public life. He did, however, say something a few years back that stuck with me and nags at me every so often. Giuliani said this:
“Truth isn’t truth.”
What he was trying to get at was the idea that one person’s truth is not the same as another’s, that there is no singular objective truth. He came across looking a bit like a confused nitwit, and of course, the media had a field day with this. We heard it splashed all over the place. “Truth isn’t truth.” It was hilarious. What kind of buffoon would say something like that?
Rudy Giuliani, apparently.
Most of us at one time or another deceive ourselves into thinking something is true simply because we want something to be true. If we believe long and hard enough, and if we shut out all the evidence to the contrary, we can get ourselves to believe almost anything.
I do it all the time. If I didn’t, I’m not sure I could find the strength to get up every day and go to work or do much of anything else either. Allow me to lead you through some of the fiction I believe.
