Picking Apart Trump’s Magic Show
Taking a step back from the news cycle
I admit it. Trying to keep up with American politics these days is not easy. The first thing I do each morning, after making coffee, of course, is to scan the headlines and read the news about events that seem important. I have started the majority of my days this way for decades. I want to know what is going on, and these days, whether it is safe to even venture out.
I normally scan the headlines of CNN, ABC News, NBC News, as well as USA Today. I don’t go to those sites to necessarily read the news though. The mainstream media can only be marginally trusted to report what is actually going on. Since their primary purpose is to make money, what they choose to report and what they choose to skip is influenced by who they have to please.
I read those sites for one reason and one reason only. I want to know what other people are reading and believing. I don’t bother looking at Fox News. I don’t think I need to explain why.
I do pay more attention to the Associated Press. They, after all, were banned from White House briefings because they dared to call the Gulf of Mexico “The Gulf of Mexico.” If a news agency gets banned by Trump, it gains credibility in my eyes. I also read pieces on the BBC site, Pro Publica, Mother Jones, and The Progressive.
