Our son-in-law is like that. He takes delight in making food so hot only he enjoys it. I have a reasonable tolerance for hot foods, but there is a point where you are not even tasting the food so much as you are enduring the heat. Spicy means tasteful, not hot. To me, someone who used very hot spices is probably covering up their lack of culinary expertise.
