Note that Ellis Island welcomed white European immigrants. There is no comparable place for immigrants from anywhere else. Also, with the Chinese Exclusion Act and later the Oriental Exclusion Act, the US government crafted legislation to keep out anyone who wasn't white. As for those Europeans who came, didn't they create their own little communities within cities - Little Italies, the Polish part of town, towns with names like Germantown, Frenchtown, where they kept their language and traditions, etc?
