Nancy Pelosi is Running for Re-Election
What other kinds of jobs could someone her age apply for?
This morning when I scanned the news headlines I was struck by the title of an article telling me Nancy Pelosi was going to run for Congress again, even though she has previously hinted she was not going to. Nancy Pelosi is about to turn 82 in March. There aren’t many people still working when they are about to turn 82, let alone in a job as important as a United States Representative. One can only wonder if she will also run for Speaker of the House also. My guess is she will.
There is no question that the United States is currently a gerontocracy. The Speaker of the House is 81. The President is 79 and considering another run in 2024 when he will be 82. The majority leader in the senate is Chuck Schumer, who is 70. The minority leader, Mitch McConnell, is 79. Additionally, three of the nine justices on the Supreme Court are over 70 as well. The average age in the U.S. Senate is 64, while in the House of Representatives it is 58. The oldest senator is Diane Feinstein, who is 88.
No one can say the elderly are not well-represented in our government.
I can already hear the cries of ageism, and the question “what does this have to do with anything?” It has a lot to do with a lot of things, but that is not…
