It's been a horse a piece for me. My self-published do about as well as those I use publications for. The number of followers you have matters, as does the number of people subscribing via email. Some publications actually have a fairly small number of followers, so getting published may or may not get you the reads you want. It's murky water at best. I also publish my articles to Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook to help generate interest.
