If I Conducted the Team Meeting at My Store

There is a reason this will never happen

Every evening in the home improvement store I work at part-time, they call all the “associates” together for what they call “the evening meeting.” At this meeting, the manager gives out all the news about the store no one cares about. The associates nod in an obligatory manner. Once in a while, one of the newer associates will ask a question, but not often. Mostly everyone just waits for it to end.

The manager holding the meetings talks about sales goals, forecasts, and profit. They give a pep talk about how important it is to “drive sales” and get customers to apply for the store’s credit card.

Most of the communication is one-way. The manager talks to the associates, and not the other way around. These are not listening sessions where management shows concern for the associates. That is done via an online survey once a year. No one really believes the people reading those surveys care. Nothing ever changes anyway.

If I ran the meeting

If I was ever allowed to run the meeting, which will never happen, I would have much…
