I work in a school that is 95% African-American, both students and staff. The older women in my school have names like Sharon, Judy and Theresa. The men have names like Robert, Terrence and Sidney. The students? DaJah, Cyere, Davonnie, Malakai, Shavonne, Tamya, and so on. Somewhere along the line, there was a real shift in what was an acceptable first name for an African-American child.
