I used to react the same way. There was nothing I hated more than being asked to explain something to a group when I wasn't expecting it. The worse interview question for me was always "Tell us a little something about yourself." I know exactly that freeze you are talking about and as you observed, drinking had nothing at all to do with it. It was there already.
