I think the reason Trump and his followers might win is because they are willing to do what no one else will. Trump denies all wrongdoing, no matter how obvious. His supporters line up behind him, no matter how heinous he is. They will do a swatting on people who oppose him. Trump will get revenge on people who speak out against him. Trump and his followers have no shame at all.
