I think each family is different. I was highly involved in the raising of my son, and in many ways more than his mother. I think you are overgeneralizing a bit when you say men don't want to be involved or don't participate. Obviously there are many men who are sperm donors, but there are many more who are out there every day providing for their family and reaping the benefits of having children who love them.
