I teach English in a high school for “behavior reassignment.” 95% of my students are African-American. 100% are poor. According to recent test results, the average reading level was 4th grade. How do we teach English to kids who can’t read? We need to be teaching Reading, not literature. I couldn’t agree more. The kids I teach should have had phonics in the early years.
