I taught in the inner city for 6 years and came across a lot of names I was not familiar with. I ALWAYS asked a student whose name I was unsure of how to pronounce it. As time went on, I got better at figuring many of them out, but I never guessed. I always asked. And I always asked the student what they wanted to be called.
