I quit smoking after 17 years of it the summer after I turned 40. It is one of the hardest things I've done as an adult. Both of my parents smoked. My dad quit when he was 69 and lived to be 87. My mom didn't quit and died of lung cancer when she was 75. Nicotine is such a strong addiction.
