I made this trip in 1984, going from Merida, Mexico to Belize City, Belmopan, crossed over into Guatemala and then on to Flores and Tikal. We hitchhiked some of it and rode buses the rest of it. Belize City was scary. Guatemalan rebels stopped our bus at gunpoint. They were looking for someone. I’m glad it wasn’t me. Hey - I think you just gave me a topic to write on!
