I have read the novel several times and watched the original movie probably a dozen or more times. As far as I can discern, the haunting comes from both the house and Eleanor herself. How much of it is simply going on inside Eleanor’s head and how much is from the House makes for a great discussion. The Haunting of Hill House and the movie The Haunting (1964, not 1999) is one of my all-time favorites.
