I have been teaching inner city at-risk kids (code for poor and mostly non-white) for 32 of my 35 years in education. You describe my students beautifully. Here are some more things they know. They also have never been on vacation. They know if they steal something from the drug store on the corner, the sales people cannot confront them or they will be fired. They know where pirated movies are on the internet. They know what the term "shelter bitch" means. They know which clothes rep each gang, and who belongs and who is just pretending. They know who committed the crime, but "they ain't sayin." They shower at school and see the social worker for tampons.
