I have been teaching high school history for 33 years. I do not do anything different for Black History Month. I teach black history every month. I don't spare the gory details. either My kids learn the truth and not the sanitized version. I've shown pictures that parents have called me about because it was "too violent." My kids read African-American authors. They learn the racism foisted upon African-Americans, the leaders of the various movements, such as MLK, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, George Jackson, Fred Hampton, and others. They learn about accomplishments in the arts and in science by African-Americans. Somehow I don't think I am the only high school history teacher that does this.
