I have been teaching for 35 years, 32 of which have been in alternative schools. I could not agree with you more. The existing system is fragmenting and crumbling under the weight of what is being asked of it. Curriculum has become politicized, and teachers demonized. What might school look like if there was no such thing as a high school diploma? As is, they mean so little anyway and don't assure any amount of learning. Of course, so long as colleges are looking for traditional GPAs and credits and the like, it will be hard to change anything.
