I give a publication 3-5 days to publish. If they haven't published it by then, I assume one of two things: they either are swamped, or they don't like my article. In either event, I withdraw it and submit it elsewhere. They same goes for overly-picky editors. If they are basically re-writing my article, I just self-publish.
