I don't think this is cynical at all. I think it is reality. In my home town when I was growing up, it wasn't the poor people who joined the Knights of Columbus and did the fundraisers for whatever the church needed. It was the well-to-do. I think it also makes the well-to-do feel a little less guilty for having so much while others suffer.
