I don't know that we will ever go "back." I agree with your assessment that a lot of people will get sick and die, and that there will be shortages of many things. Part of me thinks this is nature's way of culling the herd now that we have almost 8 billion people living on the planet, and the population is growing every day. I think of the quote, whoever said it, that "may you live in interesting times." Indeed.
