I Culled the List of People I Follow

Out with the old and in with the new

About a year or so ago a reader asked me why I have so many more followers than I do people I follow. At the time I had about 5000 followers and was only following maybe 600 people. I think the reader was questioning if I was some kind of snob who wants followers but doesn’t follow back.

That has never been the case, but I don’t do a follow-for-follow thing either. That is just plain dumb. Not everyone who is a follower writes anything. As a matter of fact, a good number of readers don’t write anything at all. What is the point of following someone who doesn’t write? I have seen people on this platform who have not written a single piece, and yet they have like 427 followers.

That tells me there are at least 427 people out there who don’t bother to see if the person they follow even writes anything. They just click the follow button and move on.

About once a year or so I go through the list of people I follow and cull out the ones I no longer want to follow. My informal objective here is to keep the list of people I follow under 1000. It was creeping up close to that, so today I began the culling process.
