I attended a service for a student of mine who committed suicide and left behind a 2 year old daughter. I remember the minister spoke and told us "she chose a long term solution to a short term problem." He then asked if there was anyone in the audience who had not thought of killing themselves at one time or another. Not a single hand went up. How could a merciful god punish someone who felt so desperate they took their own life?
