I am the only white male teacher in a school that is 99% African-American. The topic of race is unavoidable. One day the kids were talking about white and black people, and I told them there was no such thing as either. To prove my point, I rolled up my sleeve, asked for a volunteer to do the same. I took a piece of white paper and a piece of black paper, and laid out the 2 pieces of paper next to our arms. I then asked the students to point to the item that was black. They all pointed to the paper. I did the same with white, and again they pointed to the paper. Then I smiled and asked what color our arms were.
