I am in my 36th year. I teach in inner city Milwaukee in a school with an enrollment that is 100% African-American. I completely agree with you - knowing the students' names and how to pronounce them is paramount. If I am unsure, I ask the student. It shows that they matter. I also will use nicknames so long as they are school-appropriate.
