I am in my 34th year of teaching. I stopped giving homework years ago for many reasons. All homes are not equal, so homework favors kids from advantaged homes. Kids spend enough time at school. I see no reason for schools to invade the home. If students like reading, they can read — for pleasure, not a grade. If there Is something at school they want to investigate further, they can do so without the pressureof getting a grade. Evenings and weekends should be time for family, friends and free play. No one needs to solve 25 quadratic equations or read Moby Dick in their free time — unless they want to.
