I am in my 34th year of teaching, 31 of which have been at alternative high schools for kids who have a cornucopia of problems. You are absolutely right. You cannot "fix" them. We cannot go home with them, reconstruct their home lives, their biological disadvantages, or anything else that makes them appear inadequate in a school setting. When people ask what I teach, I tell them "kids."
