I am a white man whose first wife was a Black woman from Jamaica. I spent quite a bit of time on the island and saw much of what you describe. The wealthier people tended to be white or lighter-skinned Jamaicans. The poorest were very dark. Anything British was held in high regard. The locals treated Black Americans the same as they did white Americans. There was no special status just for having the same skin color.
