I agree with you completely. As a teacher of the humanities at the high school level in the United States, it is the involvement of parents and other non-teachers who force us to water down the curriculum so that it isn't too "controversial." No parents get angry about what is taught in STEM classes, but they will blow up if the teacher in a history class addresses racism, feminism, sexism, or anything else worthy of study. Colleges are free from this, which is why they can do a better job.
