How to Find Ideas for Writing

The stories are all around us if we look

I often see the topic come up about where writers get their ideas from. Most writers experience a period of writer’s block now and then. Others seemingly just run out of ideas, or so they convince themselves. I have seen many writers put out several good pieces and then go silent.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

I get asked every so often how I manage to come up with so many topics to write about. As of this writing, I have 425 published pieces and another 143 drafts that are in various stages of development. I am not as prolific as some writers I know, but I do write daily and have published regularly these past four years.

I am not a niche writer, though like anyone I have my favorite topics I like to write about. I love to write about politics and pieces on social criticism. I write memoirs and articles of interest to older people. Other times I just write what comes into my head, which is what I want to talk about in this particular piece.

It’s a big world out there with a limitless number of topics to write about if your eyes are open. The trick, of course, is to keep your eyes open and observe what is all around you.
