Having been on many hiring committees during my career, I cannot express how inadequate the entire cover letter/resume/interview process is. It has become a coached guessing game. Can you guess what answer I am looking for? Do you know that latest quasi-psychological terms we are trying to pin on you? No jobs that I know of have interviewing as a part of their job description. No jobs have you construct resumes or write cover letters. I am a teacher, and I have seen a lot of people have wonderful resumes and terrific interview skills, and I watched them bomb in a classroom. Conversely, I have seen very average interviewees with acceptable resumes walk into a classroom and do a terrific job. There has to be a better way to select people for jobs.
