When I was growing up, my dad always told me that some people live and learn, and others just live.

The older I got, the more I realized just how right he was. I’ve always tried to see the lessons life laid before me and learn from them. Locked inside the stuff of our daily lives are experiences, expectations, disappointments, and successes, and in many of these experiences is an underlying life lesson.

In looking over the decades of my life, I have identified ten universal lessons all people will be exposed to at some point in their lives.

The Lessons

One of the first lessons I learned as a small child was that of delayed gratification. As a small child, one of my favorite things to do in winter was to walk to the hill by our neighbor’s house with my sled to go sliding. What a thrill it was to slide down that hill at what seemed like lightning speeds, the snow flying in my face as I glided down the slope! Once we reached the bottom, however, reality set in as I found out it took 5 minutes to walk back up the hill. In other words…
