FYI I read your essay. :) I could not agree more. So many people today read to respond, rather than to understand. Then there is the time factor. Who has time to read? Many people simply are too rushed to give a work its due, so they scan. They read excerpts. Then read about the book. What does it say when the bookcase behind a picture of Betsy DeVos has no books on it? LOL.......
