Excellent advice! I think of it the same way. I will read the biography of the author. Then I will read some analyses of the works. Then, before reading, I will look to see how many pages, how many chapters, etc, so that I understand the lay of the land. The more I know about the book and the author before I begin, the greater the chance that I will both finish AND understand the work.
