Even If We Win, We Lose
With all the political advertisements on television, in the mail, and on the radio, a person would have to be living in a hole in the ground not to know Election Day is November 8th. Every day when I go to our mailbox I find four or five political mailings. The signs on my neighbors' lawns not only tell me when Election Day is, they tell me who to vote for too. The guy down the road has a huge “Let’s Go Brandon” flag on his garage.
How nice.
I remember the days when I used to be excited about elections. They held the promise of better days ahead and for change that was often needed. The candidates were more believable, and I was less jaded. I believed my vote mattered.
In 2008 I watched the ascendency of Barack Obama to the presidency. As I watched his popularity grow and eclipse the candidacy of Hillary Clinton, I felt I was indeed watching something historical. John McCain, the Republican nominee, never had a chance. Obama became the first African-American president.
It seemed like God spoke, for a while anyway. Then he stopped.
People who know me or read what I write have probably heard me say that I vote for Democrats because they leave better table scraps. Neither party is going to invite me to the table. Those of us caught between abject…
