Consider the following multiple-choice questions:

  1. Charlie Kirk was

A. assassinated
B. executed
C. murdered
D. killed

2. George Floyd was

A. assassinated
B. executed
C. murdered
D. killed

3. Over 58,000 U.S. soldiers were __________ in Vietnam.

A. assassinated
B. executed
C. murdered
D. killed

4. A death row inmate in Florida was recently

A. assassinated
B. executed
C. murdered
D. killed

These are not trick questions, but they are tricky questions. All four responses indicate that the person or people lost their lives. The rest is left up to perception, which is without question terra infirma. What exactly are the differences between the four words? At face value, this seems like an easy question, but it’s not.
