Are we better off? I think that depends who “we” are. If you are wealthy, you are better off. If you are middle class, probably not. If you are black or a woman, you probably are. I’m not sure there really is a “we.” There’s “us” and “them.” Being better off seems to have evolved into a zero sum game.
