A story that made a huge impact on me years ago was The Grand Inquisitor from Dostoyevski's "The Brothers Karamazov." The central idea is that people will always trade freedom for security. I see that all around me - people willing to let Trump be a dictator so long as he keeps them safe and fed. It also relieves them of any responsibility since it is Trump, not them, that is doing it.
